For 2024-25 we have been asked by our partners London Arts & Health to curate four (4) digital sandpits exploring facets of being an artist engaged in making work about health. The London Arts and Health Creative Health Sandpit is an informal space which exemplifies brilliant practice from the sector and allows members to learn, engage and explore in a structured yet open way.
About Dr. Ngozi “N/A” Oparah.
In this second online session we welcome Dr. Ngozi “N/A” Oparah. Ngozi is a writer, researcher, and artist and holds a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from California College of the Arts and a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience and Philosophy from Duke University. Ngozi completed her PhD at Loughborough University where she explored how stories affect our community and individual understanding and experiences of mental health. For nearly a decade, Ngozi served as the Director of Community Programs at StoryCenter, a digital storytelling non-profit, where she instructed in multimedia storytelling, autofiction, poetry, podcasting, and memoir writing.
Ngozi currently works as a lecturer on the MASc in Creative Health Degree at UCL and facilitates storytelling and writing workshops worldwide through her storytelling organization, Tellmore. She is the community engagement lead at Traumascapes. Her research focuses on storytelling and creative methodologies as tools for research, engagement, wellbeing, and community development.
About the Session.
The session will explore the benefits of personal, small group storytelling in community settings, particularly when working with marginalised groups and survivors. We will discuss how storytelling techniques can foster both community and individual well-being, highlighting the challenges and opportunities of facilitating storytelling circles. Participants will also be invited to take part in a short storytelling session, offering the chance to experience the impact of sharing, creating, and witnessing stories in process. This session is an opportunity to discuss the elements of storytelling that make it useful as a Creative Health tool and practical strategies for creating safe and supportive storytelling environments.
